During the summer, If I widen my sprinklers angle I can have it wet down my heat pump's external unit. I have started doing this in hopes it improves the efficiency of the unit. Would this increase the efficiency or decrease it (or have no effect?)

Do I risk electric shock?

Mine's been sitting in the rain for about 20 years now and some folks have built covers to keep the rain off. I can't imagine why watering your heat pump would make it more efficient and there's no danger of electric shock as long as there are no exposed wires and you don't take it apart.
