Back yard beach

We want to build a beach oasis in our backyard. As part of this, we would like the look of a sandy beach. We are weiry of just putting out sand, for two reasons. First and most obvioius, we do not want to have a giant neighborhood liter box for the area cats. Second, we have a great deal of wind blowing through our back yard, and do not want all of the sand to either blow away or end up in the pool. My husband thinks we can add sand to the top of the patio when we are pouring the slab, but is uncertain of how to go about achieving the beach look. Do you have any suggestions?
