A wider Egypt / Gaza border

Is there any reason why Israel does not make a one mile wide corridor inside the Egypt / Gaza border? This would make smugggling very difficult,

The only foolish question is that which remains unasked.

Too many Palestinians live right on the border, would be nearly impossible to police.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

There is an official border between Egypt and Gaza. This border is supposedly watched by Egypt as part of an agreement that included no tunnels and no arms smuggling between Egypt and Gaza. Obviously, they were not holding up their part of the agreement, if over 600 tunnels were dug. If Israel was to take over this area, they would be accused of invading Egypt, and there is no way that Israel wants to get involved on another front.

Given that Hamas will not recognise Israel and encourages the tunnels I feel it would be in Israel's best interests to move the people living right on the border way from the border and create a REAL buffer zone between Egypt and Gaza. Israel should however reopen all crossings and allow food and goods into Gaza. This way both sides get what they want, a lifting of the blockade and a halting of the rocket fire.

If Israel is determined to be rid of Hamas then it should continue the war, otherwise it should totally prevent any arms getting into Gaza but allow the people of Gaza to breath.

If Israel strikes Iran first should the U.S. help Israel?

No if Israel start a war they should fend for themselves with out U.S. help. It doesn't surprise me that you only got two Anti-Israel answers plus your own, could be more though. I have to say that if Israel does strike Iran, which I hope they do, I believe that the U.S.
