How to start your own?

I want to know where you find the land to do this without getting in trouble. My friend and I are considering (so far 5 families) developing something like a tent city but more so a new way of life as well. Structures, making a water supply and growing food etc. I would love to hear everything on this subject as my family will probably be homeless in a month or less.

The best research is your own.  Try going to www.bing.com and typing the words...  intentional communities

There you will find literally thousands of web sites from people who are already doing just what you are wanting to do.

Your direction, not your intention, determines your destination

Have you given this a lot of thought? Sounds like a "rough road to hoe" if there are children involved. Seems like it would take years just getting the supplies and the people with the knowledge to operate and maintain a place like that. Just getting a dependable water supply might take a year. I know it would at least take a year to grow food enough to get through the fall and winter months, where will the other food come from?

The land want come easy. The government will have their say on the living conditions and to make sure your taxes are paid on property and whatever else they can get from you. It want be like the horse and wagon days in the western movies. If the famlies had the money to build this, why will they be homeless in a month or two? I think people have it too easy now days with cars, t.v's and all the other things we have now, but it will be a hardship for some to give all this up. Do more thinking about this and see if there is not a solution that is more in the middle of the road instead of going to the extreme. Good idea, but wishful thinking, I'm afraid.

Yes I agree everything takes time! Time is something very few have. They have tent cities everywhere and not everyone wants to take over someone’s land plus live onto of each other. You don’t get to choose who you live next to let alone the values. Yes kids are involved but none under the age of 13. The last guy who answered told me to Bing "intentional communities" while up front might be an answer but we don’t want some ritual guru experience. We are not trying to create a cult just provide stable housing in this most honest reliable way.

There are people who have land that just sit there doing nothing with it. Some have even had it perk tested. Again everything takes time but if people start wanting to help one another and stop trying to just look out for themselves. When we die we can’t anything with us.

Going back to living as our ancestors did would not harm anyone one of us. They did it and lived just fine. As for food supply the smart thing is we have food storage saved up and we are actually pretty resourceful and knowledgeable about building, electrical and plumbing. We have also been doing research on how to make water safe for drinking, cooking etc and providing necessary electrical needs without running off a power company. We know you must look before you leap.

This is a wonderful idea but you are going to need lots of money for land and suitable housing. I don't think tents will work but mabey, Arizona has a tent city for prisoners. It would take some creative work for sure like Andy Gumps or septic tanks some kind of bathing or showers. Lots of fences and lots of work.
