I live in Vermont and have planted those huge pumpkins that you see at the fair.  It is the middle of Sept. and they are not ripe, How do I know when they can be picked?  They are still big and yellow and not orange,  I think the skin has to turn bright orange.  If we have a light frost will  it hurt my pumpkins and squash.  My other pumpkins are still green

Pumpkins are usually harvested in late September to late October.  That is why they are used for Halloween.  They are not supposed to be ripe yet.
