Is it possible to retransplant fruit/veggie plants? HELP!!

i am moving and would like to attempt to take my cucumber plants, red bell pepper plant, watermelon plants, cantaloupe plants with me or atleast some of it. i am not sure if it's possible to retransplant these. i am a first year gardener but have done pretty well. my cukes are producing cukes already but they're not quite big enough for harvesting and the other 3 types of plants mentioned are blooming but not making fruit/veggies yet. the watermelon and cantaloupe vines(?) that are sprawling all over the ground are prob atleast 2-4 ft long each and the cuke vines prob 2-3 ft but i have most of them staked. does anyone have any advice for this. my biggest prob is how do i know how deep or wide to dig w/o messing up the roots to the point of killing them. any feedback would be greatly appreciated as i am moving w/i 2 weeks. this has been a very short notice move that i am not happy about and would really like to continue my hard work on these baby's. thanks!

THAT WHICH DOESN'T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER.

Bull. Reality is, it will usually hurt like hell and leave you with a permanent limp.

Hate to tell you, but the chances of transplanting any of them are slim to none:  even if a few did survive, the shock would cause the fruit / flowers to most likely drop.  Best thing to do is try and convince the new owners to tend and enjoy your garden so  your work isn't wasted.  Bright part is,  there is still enough warm weather to start a new garden;  pick veggies that have a short season or ones that you could normally multi-crop in a season.   Or, you could use the end of summer to prepare the beds for a fall garden.

thank you for your speedy advice. i wish i could leave it here but i live on post at fort benning and they are very strict about destroying all planted items before you move. my neighbor offered to tend to it and harvest it until a new tenant arrives but they said no. so that will be the very very last thing i do before i move.i will probably cry.

what kinds of plants do you suggest for a fall garden in alabama? i want to grow pansies and some kinds of veggies but haven't decided yet which ones. any advice on that?

You probably have enough time to plant anything but your melons:  certainly enough time for cowpeas, beans, peppers, iciban eggplant, and tomatoes.   This fall you can do all greens,  early peas,  snow peas,  set onions,  etc.  -  it will make a difference if you are in L A* or North 'Bama -  call the local Co-Op when you arrive and they can tell you what works.   IF there is a chance for frequent moves,  you can plant a lot of stuff in containers and then you can take it with you.  Good luck.

yes it is possible but  ard leaves would lose less moisture and easyer to move but what have you got to lose, howeer try th is, waater well in the afternoon, could dig around them the day before slightly smaller than the pot you are going to put them in, (6"] Dig them in the evevening when the sun in goiing down, put them in the pot, water well, place them in a shady place (no sun) for a couple of days, can  cover them  with a sheet of newspaper for a day.

efqesq,

that is so annoying and rude! i have reported your stupid sales ad to yedda and hopefully you will be booted from here and banned forever! i'm already upset about moving, the last thing i need is some ridiculous sales ad for some CRAP that will fall apart a week after i get it! get off websites like this for mature, serious people!

thanks! i am moving to middle alabama. i am not sure of the zone. i'll look it up. i guess i can just hope for more cukes and tomatoes before i go. my tomato plants are huge so i knew i couldn't move them. but i've been harvesting those for a couple weeks now. well, thanks for the advice. i'll just look forward to new plants and using what i've learned on a new garden. just a shame these are gonna die. they honestly feel like children kinda to me. as much care as you put into it, feeding, watering, pruning, training to grow a certain way etc...

thanks!
