Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

It is a major Chinese principal, meaning to respect one's elders and ancestors.  It can also be applied to one's superiors.  It is an all-encompassing concept; you must be a respectable person, lest you bring shame to your family name, thus violating filial piety.

Filial Piety means "family respect" or "respect for the family" and exists in one form or another in all cultures. It is the recognition of familial social obligations. Most cultures show preference to having sons because they are economically agrarian. A farmer with many strong sons will not fall into penury in his old age if the sons recognize their filial obligations. Widows and orphans are covered as well in this duty. This social safety net can take many forms from hauling wood for your parents fire to a monthly Social Security check. We all grow old eventually; e.g. "The Story of Ruth".
