I recently drilled through my Washingtonia palm trees to hang a hammock and now they are leaking a wierd sappy liquid...the trees still look fine but, they won't stop leaking...am I slowly killing my trees?
Yes If what you said is correct "you drilled through not just into it ?
which lead us to why on earth would you of done such a thing but . I guess were past that . if it's totally through use a ringed head threaded bolt capable of extending through the hole apply a nut to the very end then a over sized washer and a rubber grommet gasket the size of the washer . push the bolt completely through the hole you drilled apply a same size rubber grommet gasket and then a same over sized washer and bolt to complete the hold tighten both bolts against each other till secured fully tight if it still seems to be leaking slightly re loosen an wrap a small gauzed cloth as used in any emergency medical supply bandage kit before the rubber washer several times six to ten times around the bolt ends an retighten completely secured it should stop leaking . hopefully if you did the fix right . Your tree is bleeding it life away they contain quite a few gallons of liquid an will drip for quite sometime until it cant keep up regenrating vital fluids " hence runs out of water to soak up n convert to its own fluid " if the hole is not completely through use a screw with a ring head on one end an the same sort of washer rubber gasket grommet an gauge screw in tight until the washer come to rest secure n full up to the hole sealing off the flow of its fluid . hang you hammock from the ring an make shure to water and also a little palm fertilized will help regenerate what loss of its vital fluid that was endured . they will eventually will totally clot up n quit leaking with a little help as i suggested . next time just secure a ring to a rope an wrap the rope around the tree tightly . if you would like to just consider that try just corking the holes with a trimmed down wine cork to stop the bleeding . hopefully it hasnt bleed so much that it cant recover. ? Most trees are very resilient an can survive quite a bit so good luck it will most likely survive if it hasn't been to long don't wait till morning ... do it now ! at least try to cork it or plug the hole with anything possible even if a temporary fix will help " A pencil " ? maybe i'm not sure of the exact size but you be the judge search for an appropriate sized fit . i hope my suggestion helps . let me know how your trees are doing if you care too.
