As the USA and other countries begin to wean off of oil as used in transportation, and start using electric powered vehicles, do oil-producing countries have plans in place to change their economy so that they are not financially impacted? Or is the reduction on oil-dependence going to happen so slowly that it will be hard to notice?

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

Unfortunately, it is going to take a long time until the oil producing countries have to worry about many of us driving electric cars. If you read this article you will see that General Motors is not exactly telling the whole story concerning miles per gallon figures for its new Chevrolet Volt.

Yes, oil producing nations have already started preparing for the eventuality of electric transportation.  The technology for electric cars has been available for decades, but I think it is being artificially suppressed by these same oil producers.  If you look at our transportation it is almost completely powered on fossil fuels, and yet any do-it-yourself mechanic can go out and build their own electric car and almost replace their use of gasoline cars.  The only thing holding electric transportation back is a refueling infrastructure that works the same as gas stations, where you can travel a long distance and recharge in just a few minutes.  Again, the technology is there, but it needs to hit a critical mass of having more users before a commercial entity will adopt it.  Each of us can demand this form of transportation by getting involved.  Check with the Electric Auto Association and start using an electric vehicle today.
