How "afar" are we talking? Across the room? Or across the country?
If it's across the room, pay attention to his body language. Does he look at you and make eye contact? Is he smiling at you? If so, then he's probably attracted to you.
If it's across the country, then visual cues are a lost cause (even if you have video cam). You'll have to rely on his words.
