  1. A customer wants to make a teepee in his backyard for his children. He plans to use lengths of PVC plumbing pipe for the supports on the teepee, and he wants the teepee to be 12 feet across and 8 feet tall (see figure). How long should the pieces of PVC plumbing pipe be?

Bull. Reality is, it will usually hurt like hell and leave you with a permanent limp.

OK,  I don't have the figure you refer to;  but, as usual, having all the info and facts never bothers me, so I'll just barge on.  I'm assuming (danger) you are laying a circle 12 foot in diameter with a center pole at 8 foot high : using the old 90 degree triangle rule:  side a squared (6 foot - half of the 12 foot) + side b squared (8 foot - the center pole) = side c squared (the unknown side)      6 x 6 = 36      8 x 8 = 64    together they egual 100    so the unknown is 10 foot.   But you really want your outer poles to continue through  so they can be gathered and tied to the center pole ( and NOT of the same exact length - for looks only), so i would make them longer: BUT the correct answer is  10 foot for the question.
