How to become a literary agent

I have worked as a copy editor for a medical publisher for 25 years. I have not worked for 15 years. I now have two people who want me to serve as an agent to try to get their books published. I have no idea where to start. I am excited to try this and have printed much info. from the web. But I am still lost as to what is the next step. Advice would be useful concerning what books to read, where to get info., etc. Any information or exchange of ideas would be wonderful and appreciated. These people have asked me to help them because they seem to believe that I speak, write, and would do well on the phone, meeting people face-to-face, etc.

Laugh more: tears cloud one's vision.

Literary agents are a breed apart, sad to say.  They rely on inroads into the literary industry, sell manuscripts that publishers turn into books, and this business is utterly ruthless.

I wouldn't wish that off on anyone.
