  This is according to Google.  Unlike English, there is no alphabet in Chinese.  Instead, the Chinese language uses a series of symbols, each symbol having its own meaning, instead of putting letters together to form words that have meaning.  Each symbol stands for a spoken syllable.  The Kangxi Dictionary shows 47,035 characters.

There are 26 letters in the Chinese Alphabet just like in the English alphabet, but in Chinese there are 23 consonants and 24 vowels from a combination of the 26 letters. They are as follows:

26 letters: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

23 consonants: b p m f d t n l g k h j q x zh ch sh r z c s y w

24 vowels: a o e i u v ai ei ui ao ou iu ie ve er an en in un vn ang eng ing ong
