I was working about a week back and was about to enjoy a apple fritter donut .
When I notice a pack of black ants milling around our shack.
So I tore off a chunk of the donut and placed near the ants.Who soon began their feast.
Shortly followed by others.I noticed two ants got into a tug of war with each other.
Going at each other like two sumo wrestlers.Their mandibles locked in combat. When all of a sudden one ant's body went limp. Then the victor picked up the dead ant and carry it over to the walk ledge. But it slipped out of the victor's grasp and dropped to the ground below.
I picked up the dead ant and placed it near the feeding ants.
Mean while the killer ant crawled down to where it thought the victim had landed. And appeared agitated at not finding the ants body.
While I watch the dead ant. Some ants stumbled across the dead ant.And reacted by jumping or recoiling violently from it.
A few moments later the killer returned. And by passing the other ants and returned inside the nest.
And a short time later a larger ant went directly to the dead and picked it up .Then it quickly traveled far away from the others carrying the dead ant.
It traveled with only one thing on it's mine. With certain direction. And disappear into the long grass.
A little while later I seen the ant with the dead ant still in it's mouth heading to a dead rotting log I knew to be a home or nest for the black ants.
It was like the ant was conducting a investigation into the murder of a fellow ant.Or keeping the ants death from the general population.
Can someone answer what caused this behavior among Ants?
Also is it true Germany passed a law against the destruction of ant colonies? And if so why?
Later days the same ant colony passed by, and refused to eat or carry away fresh donut bit's.That i had laid out.
I wonder if the colony passed a law among themselves. Not to eat the donut bit's Since it led to deadly behavior among them?
Thank you Gavin
