What is this large bumble bee like insect flying around my deck here in St. Louis. It chases bugs, birds ect. It hovers very close and is quite fast.

If it's almost 2 inches long with a double set of transparent wings, it's a Dragonfly.
If it's not fun, you're doing it wrong.

Are you sure it's an insect and not a hummingbird? They are a little bigger than bumblebees and make a buzzing/humming sound when they fly.

Maybe a hornet?
If it actually looks like a large bee and is black and yellow - we call them wood bees. They bore into wood making perfectly round holes.

I was just researching that very question!! I wanted to know the difference between bumble bees and wood bees. A few years ago we had them in our carport and someone told us they were wood bees. This week I have seen quite a few of them buzzing around the front porch. I don't see any signs of holes in the porch wood but the did bore holes in the carport. I found the link below if it's helpful. PS - I also live in Missouri so maybe they are prone in our area?
