Is this house about to collapse???

my husband and I had to take over his mother's mortgage on her 1928 home when she passed away. The house is pretty well built, but we've been noticing that the crown moulding around the ceiling is separating badly and getting all wonky looking and there are a few walls that are looking bowed in places....we live in a very depressed area and are both disabled so income is very small to say the least.... PLEASE tell me this means something OTHER than the house is about to fall in!! Thank you. Jane A

If it were just your crown molding pulling loose it would be possible the molding was installed very hastily and not nailed properly to secure it to the wall framing and ceiling joists; however the statement made that it apears you have walls bowing indicate a very high pobability that you have structural problems in the foundation and underpinnings beneath your house. If you take a level and check all your floors with an inexpensive level facing both the direction of the length of your your home and the width of your home, and the bubbles do not consistently show your floors to be level, I would recommend you have a foundation inspection done, also there may be termite damage or rot in some of the main girders underneath your home. Talk to at least 3 to 5 different contractors and do not be pressured into doing anything until you have had a lot of time to digest the information your professionals offer you. If you are on low or fixed income you may qualify for repairs from rural housing improvement administrations such as are sponsored by the Farmers home Administration, or perhaps if you are in a an urban area your city may have a neighborhood improvement program fund that can help you finance repairs. If your foundation walls show signs of cracking and you have flooding in your basement and crawl space, you may have significant problems that require not only structural repairs but drainage work as well. Do not panic, if your house has stood since 1928 it is not unusual for houses to "move", these movements may not necessarilly mean your house is falling down, you may just need minor cosmetic repairs.

Thanks so much for the insight...you can't imagine how freaked out I've been over this stuff!  The flooring situation is right off the scale in terms of being level, so I will definately be following up using the pointers you gave (I have to admit that the prospect of dealing with contractors scares me, but you've successfully emboldened meLaughingTHANKS!).  As for the rest...I guess it will all fall in place as I find out what needs to happen here.  Thanks again, and I have to say: this little area is great!
