I really need help. a very heavy-footed couple bought the condo upstairs of me, ripped up the carpet and padding; installed new base hardwood and topped this with plastic flooring that resembles wood. How can I insulate my ceilings so I don't hear their steps - I am hoping I either go deaf or get some reasonable sound insulation. Help, PLEASE. Anne Eichhorn

Unless you are really good woth tools and working over head I suggest you have a professional do this. Install 1" by 2" firring strips on the ceiling 16" on center going the opposite direction of the ceiling joist that arte presently there. Then install styrofoam insullation inbetween the firring strips. Then install quiet rock sheet rock which comes in 5 different degrees of quiet control. This product is very expensive pending what type you purchase. You can go to the quiet rock website to see the types they offer and an audio sample is there to see how it compares to regular rock in all the types they offer. You will have to go to a professional drywall or lumber yard to order, I doubt a home center like home depo would get this for you. The product is install like sheet rock except a sound caulk is used at all joints prior to tapeing and finishing. If someone other then yourself is doing the install make sure they are giving you the right products. With the wrong contractor this is an opportunity to really rip off an unsuspecting consumer. Good luck. Any questions I can be reached at Nick@plasteringbynicholas.com

Regards,

Nick
