Are heartworm supplements necessary?

My dog is 8 years old and has no history of heartworms or fleas and I'm wondering if giving the monthly heartworm supplement (Sentinel) is necessary.  I have given it to her religiously over the years but am on a bit of a budget these days and the supplement is quite expensive that said I don't want to do something that would be detrimental to her health.

She is an indoor dog - lhasa apso.  The vet mentioned that she seems to have some arthritis in her knees and suggested a supplement for that.  I would prefer that she take as few medications/supplements as possible.

I think that the heart worm medicine is incredibly important because there is pretty much no cure for it if your dog gets heart worm. It is worth preventing it, even though the medicine is not cheap. It is recommended that all dogs go on this medicine.

Share your concerns about price with your vet. Most will work with you and maybe suggest a cheaper but, as effective substitute. Your dog is only 8 and their average lifespan is 16 years. Heartworm can be a devastating parasite that should be taken care of. I have a 13 year old indoor only cat at home and he gets flea and tick medicine because my husband and I both work outside.  He gets medicine for a thyroid disease and he also has a heart murmur. Once a year his vet checks are about $ 300. Is there anywhere else you can make cuts?

Hi Sharon. I feel your concern about budgets being tight as I am in a similar situation with my 3 dogs. Unfortunately, having your furry friend on heartworm pills is an absolute must and not something you can cut out (as you will end up spending much more in medical bills if she does get sick). I find that shopping around online for heartworm medicine is the best (as I buy a year's supply for much less than what my vet sells it for). Also, I am pretty good at finding coupon codes for different websites that sell pet meds. I'd love to help if you want. Let me know what you need and I will do my best to find the best price for you.

Yes it is I have two dogs so I would know. I also know how to save money on it ask your vet about either 1 a year pills that you can just pay for once each year instead of every month or go to your local spca there you will get the heartworm pills for less. Hope this helps.
