what are warm iv solutions? I saw a local Paramedic say on TV if somebody gets frostbite they will give them warm iv solutions. What are they and how different are they from other iv treatments? What is the result of giving them to one suffering from frostbite?

Thanks,

Not frostbite but for hypothermia.  When the body loses too much temperature it helps to rewarm it with warm IV fluids.  These are normal IV fluids such as lactated ringer's solution or normal saline that are warmed slightly in a microwave oven.   Warm baths, warm IV fluids, and being placed in a warm environment with blankets all assist in rewarming the person.

warm IV solutions is just warm saline solution (basically water), that is put into your body by an IV.  It is used to quickly warm up your body.

As an emergencey nurse I have never heard of the solutions being warmed in a microwave oven. The solutions are kept on hand in a warming cupboard (kind of the reverse of a refigerator) that keeps the at a consistantly warm tempature that is known to be what the body needs when it is hypothermic or in a state of shock.

We also warmed the fluids with a machine that was at bedside attached to the IV fluids...Blood is also frequently but on a warmer.Again though I personally have never heard of putting them in a microwave in the 27 years I worked ER...but you learn something new everyday!!

This is done for hypothermia and for frostbite if it is severe enough..for shock and for trauma patients. Many times in the OR..anytime the doc thinks the patients temp is too low or might benifit from alittle warming this is used...to help keep the patient warm and ward off shock.

Do these IVs help much? What do they do when they are needed? Are they put in like all Iv's?

Thanks
