Mr.Jqna,  I don't think it would hurt someone's chances to receive disability.  There is no guarantee that the surgery will work, and the person could be worse than before the surgery.  A social security disability attorney can probably answer this question.  Did you know it is an almost 3 year wait to get a hearing before the judge?  I was reading that in our local newspaper not too long ago.  A lady had stitches in her tongue.  She bit it when she had a seizure.  She applied almost 3 years ago and is still waiting.  I think that's insanity to have to wait that long.  If you are approved, you get back money.  But then you have to use that back money to pay all the bills you got behind on while waiting the 3 years to get anything.  I think this is one of the things our country needs to change.

Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.

Along the lines of ASM, having surgery could ruin your chances if you are one of the rare individuals that happen to die during or after surgery.

I speak from experience here.  They do not want to pay you for SSD.  They look at all your medical records and if you have not done everything possible so that you can return to work or be gainfuilly emplyed in another position, they can deny your claim.  Of course, if your insurance won't pay for the surgery, it turns into a battle.  One way or the other, you will be fighting for SSD for 2 years.  They want to make sure you aren't lying about your condition.  You might as well have the surgery anyway, especially if it can improve your quality of life.
