Fabraea is a fungus that appears on the leaves of the plant as a black spot with a black pimple in the center of the spot. It causes the plant to defoliate and the fruit to crack and ooze. The Hawthorne is a member of the Rose family. Fabraea most often attacks Pear, Apple, and Quince but it can also infect the Hawthorn. Spray with a fungicide for fruiting trees or Roses especially as new leaves form. It will take several sprayings. Organic fungicides can be effective. Be sure to clean up and dispose of fallen leaves in the trash and do not use them in your compost or as ammendments to your soil as the fungus will spread and multiply. Whether your Hawthorne has Fabraea or black spot the treatment and procedure is the same.
