I have seen Probabilities done for the existence of life, like us, existing. The numbers are so small, as to be negligible.
Because we know nothing about other potential life forms, its existence is purely speculative. I read a great SF book decades ago about a bunch of totally different life forms.
Sara, to invoke the existence of life based on huge numbers, in my opinion, lacks logic. I see this as no different than taking apart a billion Rolexes and putting each one in a paper bag. Then you would have a billion monkeys shake each bag for a billion years. Will there be a perfectly assembled Rolex that keeps flawless time in just one of the bags? My mind tells me no.
One question that always runs thru my mind is, if there is life out there some where, and they possess FTL travel, and ansibles for communication, what possible reason would they have to visit us? (I do not buy into the fact that they are altruistic. They could be. Just no guarantee.) I find this situation to similar to saying to my sister that I want us to go invesigate some ant hills.
SF and Fantasy are right there at the top of my favorite things to read. I find them very intertaining.
I am thinking that when ET lands, I am going to have to delete this post very quickly.
