Smile, it's contagious!

Maybe I'm old school but I thought when you host a party you also provide the refreshments regardless of how large/small.  If you cannot afford to do, so change the menu or cancel the party.  I think it is in bad taste to ask guests to provide for themselves and are expected to give a gift too.

So, just what is your question?  You don't ask one!

It's customary at most these events that guests bring some amount of $$ per head, this way they dont have to bring anything....

However these are mostly school parties that i do, and when i invite a large crowd to the restaurant.

The fact that its your party doesnt mean you should bear the financial burden this may become.

Tell them to bring some $$ to the party and you will bring the refreshments.

Between my friends and i, its an understanding. I'm not sure though how you would tell them to do so.

You can't. It is incredibly rude and bad manners.

If you want to have an engagement party, then you either prepare to pay all the costs or you scale back and have the type of party you can afford.

If you want to have a pot luck get together at which you plan to announce your engagement, then do that. But it's not a formal "engagement party."
