A prescription drug is a medication that can be purchased or given out only with written instructions from a licensed healthcare provider, such as a doctor, dentist, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant, to a pharmacist. These written instructions are known as a prescription.

I llegal drugs are illegal due to their unlicensed production, distribution, and possession. These drugs are also called "controlled substances". Most governments have designed legislation to criminalise illegal drug use.  Even for simple possession, legal punishment can be quite severe (including the death penalty in some countries).

That question is too broad to answer without making the answer a 'book'. But the biggest basic difference is that the "illegal drugs", (I must assume that you're referring to the obvious 'illicit' drugs), are not consistent in their ingredients or the measurement of those ingredients. The "Prescription drugs" are controlled through every stage of the manufacturing process by the FDA regulations and therefore are far more consistent in both dose and effect.

Differences : Prescription drugs are obtained legally through doctors. They are intended to help treat physical or psychological afflictions. Illegal drugs are not lawful to buy, sell or possess.

Similarities : They are both addictive if abused. Fortunately, drug addiction treatment programs can help with both with any type of drug.
