Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.

  3. a substance to be thus tested or analyzed
  4. the result or report of such an analysis
  5.  [Now Rare] an attempt

vt.

  1. to make an assay of; test; analyze
  2. to attempt

>vi.

  1. to be shown by analysis to contain a specified proportion of some component [this ore assays high in gold]

If this is your question, then I do not have any idea what you are after.

This is one of several definitions for the word essay: a short literary composition of an analytical, interpretive, or reflective kind, dealing with its subject in a nontechnical, limited, often unsystematic way and, usually, expressive of the author's outlook and personality
