I am the owner of http://www.managing-stress.org which helps people who are suffering and dealing with the effects of stress on a daily basis.

I also manage http://www.stopconstantfatigue.org which offers help to those people who are always tired .

Firstly, you need to approach someone in your family who you trust without any doubt in your heart. Someone who you know will not judge you! Do not tell the entire family in one sitting, rather sit down with one individual person.

Talk honestly about your feelings, tell them that you have been feeling really down, and perhaps even suicidal. Ask them for help. If they love and care about you, they will take it seriously.

Please do not be afraid to seek out the help that you need. Asking for help is the first step in recovery, and being able to lead a normal happy life again.

With regards to starting the conversation, simply sit down in a quiet place with the person you have chosen, and tell him/her that you are feeling unhappy, having certain thoughts and would really like some help before you sink any deeper into depression. If this person loves and cares about you, they will take you seriously and assist you in getting the help that you need.

Smile  If it's funny, laugh. If it isn't funny, laugh anyway!  Smile

Hi Shawty_Badd

First of all, have you seen a doctor? If you haven't then make an appointment. Feeling depressed and being clinically diagnosed with depression, are 2 different things.

Second, if you are depressed, it is nothing to be ashamed of. There are many different treatments for clinical depression that work very well. Depression is normally a chemical imbalance in the brain and medications along with a little counseling and you can overcome it.

So, maybe telling your family that you are depressed might not be the way to approach it. It might be better to say that you don't feel quite right and ask to go to a doctor.

Feel better ................Smile

I think you need to talk to someone that you're comfortable with about your depression.  Someone need to know about your situation or at least see a doctor, and find out how serious of the condition.

I myself have friends who have depression, they have tried different approaches.  You may want to look for something that you've great interest in, put yourself into it, spend most of your time with people who are less fortunate compare with you.  You may try to visit some old and lonely people or orphanage, spend time with them, tell joke or something, just to make them feel they're not alone, make them laugh, even make friends with them.

Working most of your time in Charity and helping others will make your life full and meaningful, instead of thinking about all the negative thing that you could think of.

Other than that, "Meditation" is also one of the way to help out with emotional problem, if you believe in the Universal power, visualize very bright light from the Godness of your belief to rediate bright white light toward you, visualize that all the negative energy within yourself and all the negative thought inside of you, turn into black smoke and leave your body through the pores, and disapper into the air.  Think about yourself absorbing all the positive white light, you're full of light, just like the sunlight.

Since human are made of body and mind, the mind itself is something that we don't see, but through meditation and relaxation, you can help yourself to see yourself better.  Therefor relaxation music CD or hypnotherapy CD would help.

All you need is patient to continue with the practice, listen to the CDs everyday.

Friends of mine were volunteering in a temple often, they actually do a lot of chanting and charity to put their mind in something that will make them forgoting about their depression, after pretty much and working hard, they graduately reduce the intake of medicine of depression, which give them a great deal of side-effect.  I hope this help.

I can't add much to the above - other than to say I think you should approach your doctor first...most GPs should be able to make a diagnosis whether this is situational or clinical - and whether you need to see a therapist or a psychiatrist...

Again - be HONEST about what you are going through...not doing that can cause a major setback in your getting better (I know that firsthand)

And ask your doctor what you should say to your family...if it's clinical and you aren't sure they will understand - find some pamphlets or books or articles on the net you can share with them...

I wish you the best...

National Suicide Prevention Hotlines (in the US - though Im not sure where you are)

800.273.TALK or 800.784.2433

This SHOULD be a very non-threatening call...I have called on a couple of occasions even when I wasn't in danger - but didn't know where to turn...I would imagine they could tell you where to turn...
