Why am I dealing with an Adult-Child Boss?

How to deal with an unprofessional boss.  I work for a well known "coffee shop," and it's not starbucks, but the owners and my co-workers are so hard to work with. I feel like they enjoy playing mind games, nitpicking, and gossiping about each other endlessly.  You would think I would be referring to immature individuals, however the majority of them including the owner are adults.  Example, after listening to hearsay by managerial employees the owner makes judgements purely based on the hearsay she is fed.  Rather than talking with an employee to explain their expectations and possibly listen to the employee to see if there could be an explanation....she "immaturely" doesn't schedule you to work, or transfers you to work at a different location as a "punishment."  Or, after being scheduled to work she leaves it up to a co-worker to let you know you're leaving early, and my all time favorite which I was told 10 minutes before leaving work..."you won't need to come in tomorrow after all"....No explanation.  My response was..."when was "(the owner)" planning on telling me that?...

I just don't understand why the owner avoids talking with individuals one on one, it's so childish and unprofessional.  I worked for 20 years in a professional environment and I guess I am use to being treated with respect and dignity.  Where there are policies in place for the protection of the employer and employee.  At my age, I don't need to be treated like a child, and certainly don't understand the motive behind it.

Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

"Adult" is a relative term. These people may be chronological adults, but they certainly are not behaving like 'mature' adults from what you describe.

You don't mention how old your supervisor is; if s/he is significantly younger it could be a simple case of s/he being made manager due to seniority, not ability or training.

Is this coffee company a major player (i.e., Peets or other national chain)? If so, the company may have a policy in place which covers workplace behavior - perhaps it even offers training seminars for its employees. If that's the case, you might be able to request assistance from someone at corporate.

If not, then I am afraid there is little you can do. You can try to gently guide them to better behavior (be direct, but not accusatory; offer praise along with positive suggestions for change). You may want to check into Business courses at your local college (the community college in my area offers one-day seminars on various topics including "Dealing with Difficult People") OR you may ultimately decide to seek a job elsewhere. Unfortunately, the latter may not be an option in today's economy.

From what you post, my sense is that this behavior is not personally directed at you, but instead is a case of bad manners and poor behaviors caused by immaturity and lack of training and experience. I feel for you - try to keep your head up and lead by example - and best of luck!

Thanks for your reply. Good advice..I might look into contacting corporate, however I don't know that it will do any good. It's a coffee shop chain, independently owned.
