The Eucharist connects back to the last supper, when Christ broke the bread and said 'this is my body, take of this and eat'. And then poured the wine and said, 'this is my blood, take of this and drink'. The concept of the Eucharist is that the wafer and the wine is literally transubstantiated into the body and blood of Christ, thereby sharing the same connection and blessing as did the disciples.
