What causes kidney failer while having pneumonia?

What causes Kidneys to shut down while having pneumonia? A very good friend of mine was admitted to the hospital on Monday 12/15/08 bacause of pneumonia, I'm not sure what type it is though. He is morbidly obeise and his heart is very weak from being so big, also, he has sleep apnea. I visited him yesterday, and of course he looked sick, but he still seemed to be himself. This morning 12/16/08 I learned that his kidneys had shut down, this happened over night. Through the course of the day his kidneys have started to function " a little" but they are still not functioning at 100%. He was running a temperature of 102 and I thought that maybe between the pneumonia, high temp, and weak heart that this could be the reason why they failed. Also, is it a good sign that they started functioning so soon after they failed?   Lee -  Richmond , Va.
