Why does my car sub amplifier make the the cockpit speaker's volume surge when I turn it up?

why does my car sub amplifier make the the cockpit speaker's volume surge when I turn it up? The car came with a factory installed amp for the rear deck and doors. I have the  sub amp feeding off one of the rear deck speakers through "high level" input. I am lost. The only thing I can come up with is that the factory amp is feeding too much when I turn it up. Mid to low volume sounds great. I am thinking of feeding the sub amp via "pre" factory amp. I just wanted to hear opinions before I go digging for wires in a tight spot.

TIA
