Probably because algae are so very simple yet help so many different organism, from the organisms that eat them to the organisms that eat the organisms that eat the algae!  They are a simple building block ecologically speaking.  They oxygenate the water, and add as much as 20% of our breathable oxygen here on Earth.  They are simple building blocks that so many other organisms rely upon for survival.  That is why they are so very important.
