With or agains the grain..

ive been cuttn hair 4 a while now and everytime i have to cut ethnic hair .im told to cut with the grain ...i run the clippers thruu the hair with say a 2 n the hair is thick but it jus doesnt seem to cut unlless i go against the grain...i watch videos on you tube and they move with the grains leavin the nice wave in the hair...please help me out....
