Wrong depth of basement poured

My daughter is building a home. She signed a contract for the basement to be 9' and the contractor dug it at 8'. The home is already framed in and it was the builder's mistake. Can you tell me what they might be losing money-wise as they are currently negotiating for options to either fix this or upgrade other items.

I don't see a loss of money here--I'm assuming your daughter will still have a full basement, so this doesn't affect the house's square footage and it's impossible to project this difference in resale value. For what it's worth, an 8 foot ceiling is high enough for most people if the mechanical equipment (ductwork) is not intruding down from the basement ceiling. One option is to have the builder make sure that equipment is recessed up between joists, etc. The real issue has more to do with getting the house you want when you're going to the trouble and expense of custom building. Has your daughter discussed with the builder the possibility of having a professional house-mover/lifter jack-up the framed structure? Of course, this would add 1 foot to the overall height of the house, which could open a can of wormy issues.
