Worn stainless steel spoons

Are stainless steel eating spoons that have turned a dark gray (worn,I guess) unhealthly (harmful) to use?

It won't kill you but in a restaurant it would cost you points with the health inspector.  Use steel wool on them to clean them.  It is just from years of use and washing.  But yes if you want shiny spoons rub them with steel wool.  It will remove any build up.  I recommend washing out most of the soap if you buy them from a grocery store so you can see what you are doing without all the soap.  Then wash as usual.  And guess what????Brand new spoons!

Smile, it's contagious!

Just polish them up with SOS, Brillo, or steel wool.  They have probably darkened because they have stained with things like coffe, tea.  Every so often I do a few pieces when washing dishes.  Never had a problem. --- C1

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,
Stailess is a group of materials (NOT a specific material).  Within this family there are several groups (won't bother you with the names).... These groups are very different in terms of their properties (including corrosion resistance).  Cuttlery is often made with the cheapest Stainless steel (ferritic Stainless) which has low corrosion resistance).  So they were corroded (oxidation is "dry corrosion").  You can use them, no danger (it's most probably an very thin layer of Oxides).  Sure "appearance" is important, so either polish them (you received good answers how to do it) or buy new ones.
Best regards,

Thanks for the reply. I gave it a try and it helped a little although they are still grayish.  It is the whole spoon handle and all.  As long as it won't hurt me I guess I will just use them as is.  I only use them for my personal use...not company.  Thanks again.

Thanks for knowledge upgrading.  Polishing didn't seem to help much.  I really like the shape and weight of the spoon;  they are more like 'industrial weight and shape' rather than so called normal flateware.  As in my other replies, I only use them for personal use.  Glad to know they are not harmful.
