Turtle shells again!

I read the Old Redneck Trapper Method response that was posted 9 months ago on how to clean a turtle shell and have this question for you -

I have a turtle shell that i cooked and then let dry for a few weeks in my house.  I just removed the remaining cartilage best that I can and am wondering if it is still a good idea to put it in the bucket with borax, salt and baking soda?  What does that achieve? And then the vinegar?.  Can you please advise?

I have included the original response below:

Old Redneck Trapper Method.....Put it on an ant hill and cover with something to keep the sun and other critters off of it for 2 to 3 weeks until all meat is eaten (real stinky).  Or cook it and carve all the meat out. Then put it in a 5 gallon bucket with 2 cups Borax powder, two cups salt, one large box of baking soda, and enough water to cover the entire shell.  Let soak for 4 hours.  Rinse and dry for one day.  Put back into the bucket with 1 gallon vinegar and enough water to cover the entire shell.  Soak for 24 hours.  Rinse real good.  Put it in an old gas grill with the cover closed and leave in full sun for 2 weeks.  Then paint extra thick the entire top and bottom shell inside and out with poly urethane.  It will be a beauty with out having to use the dangerous chemicals.
