I found that when my children were a year old, they weren't that into toys. They would get presents but they didn't really look at them long and were more interested in what was just around the house. That being said, I think that the best gifts to give them would be either some kind of ball or some sort of toy that makes music. For instance an interactive book that can make animal sounds, or a baby piano, etc.

P.S. We like books and simple gifts, especially for babies. But if you must buy something, Haba, Lamaze and Parents brand toys are all good.

I give my friends little one year old girls the same doll I gave to my oldest grandaughter 17 years ago.  It cries 'mama' and has the sweetest vinyl face and all cloth body, even the hands and feet. 

Every one year old girl that I've given that doll to falls in love with it.  The stories the mothers tell me are that the child identifies with the doll and covers it tenderly and carries it with them everywhere.  The brand name is: Little Huggims
