Swollen Limb

i went to the doctor about my swollen ankle.  It happened when I was trampled by a horse 8 YEARS ago, she landed on the back of my leg. At the time I had an xray but this showed no broken bones, just massive swelling.  I am still having to rest my leg and the swelling and pain/throbbing is still in my ankle . Have tried arnica tablets and cream - both really help I take them each year for three months at a time, I massage my toes, sole and leg weekly.  Any other advce?

i think you should go back to the doctor and have them run some more tests, because if there was no injury, just swelling, it wouldn't still be bothering you.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply -I did go to another doctor when we moved house about 2 years ago, she said my ankle looked ok and if it bothered me put a bandage round it during the day and keep it elevated as much as possible.  Obviously this is what I had been doing!  When the horse came down she was shod.  I had the impression and massive swelling for months, after the trauma swellings went down I was left with a dark brown bruise on my lower leg for about 3 years. I no longer have the mark just a swelling at the outside of my ankle going above my ankle bone, it swells and throbs most of the time, but actually seems to get worse when its elevated. should I try another doctor or am i waisting their time?

You could try going to a good physical therapist to see what he or she thinks.  I know this kind of injury can take a long time to heal.  Given you've seen two doctors (hopefully, specializing in orthopaedics), this might be a reasonable next step.  I tend to agree that the doctors you've seen are missing something but after searching around and talking with a few friends in our orthopaedics department, PT is definitely something to consider.  Best wishes to you!  It must be awful to have to deal with this for so long.

Thank you for for reply, Phisio is something Ive looked into and I do circular and rocking exercices on the ball I am also wareing airplane travel socks when it gets really bad.  Something else I forgot to mention is that my toe next to my big toe is marbled grey when I get out of bed in the morning, is there a connection? (my doctor didnt think so)

I think your doctor is wrong on this count.  The fact your toe is marbled grey when you get out of bed in the morning is indicative of a circulation problem.  I'm speculating here but perhaps your accident significantly damaged veins and that could be the reason for the swelling, pain and discoloration of your toe.  I would definitely consult an internist or orthopaedist about this as problems with your circulation can be quite serious.  Please try another physician to get to the root of what's going on and don't stop till you get answers.  Best wishes to you and, again, I am so sorry that you have been through so much!
