most dogs that are high breed must have there glands popped.  The vet will do it.  Not really a big deal to them.  My groomer use to do it also

sometimes a brown substance will come from there. Step one wash the area with dog shampoo. Step two keep nose away from area. That should fix him right up.

A common thing is for the anal glands to fill and need cleaned.  There are 2 tiny holes around his rectum and they fill with fecal material.  They will also itch and this is why you see dogs sitting on thier bottoms and scooting around.  Small dogs are bothered with this more than large ones as the big ones seem to express their own anal glands.  Occasionally an anal gland will abcess and the dog needs to see a Dr. so that the anal gland or glands can be cleaned and packed.  Most dog groomers will express the anal glands when they care for them and can show an owner how to do this.
