Asked about “Ask question: Scientists solve 30yearold aurora borealis mystery”

How?

I know and can handle Maxwell's equations up to a certain point, (well,im on my 4th year in industrial engineering,so I know more or less tas much as a physicist from the end of the XIX century ) but I have no idea how magnetic fields manage to store energy from the Sun.Looks like particles interacting with the atmosphere creating currents?? Seems strange... I dont know where Earth's magnetic field comes from but I thought it had to do with currents at the core....
Could you lend me a hand with this?
