My sister is going to be sentenced on Monday for check forgery and prescription forgery. Her attorney has worked out a plea agreement with the DA's office (two years parole) but the judge has to approve it so jail is still a possibility. My mother--who still supports my sister and with whom my sister lives--is very upset, understandably. She's particularly worried about having a parole officer involved in my sister's life for two years as she was just told they can drop in anytime and will be monitoring all my sister's activities. My mother has always led a very law-abiding life and has a long history of being very active in the community but somehow she feels this will encumber her life as much as my sister's. We've never had any experiences like this in our family and don't know anything about the parole system. Is it truly as awful as my mother seems to think it is? She was told be a friend who is an attorney that going to jail is "easier" than being on parole. I'm trying to quell my mother's fears but this is out of my league.....If anyone has any idea of what life as a parolee is like, I would appreciate hearing about it. Many thanks.
