myfamily.com is a get place to start. acnestry.com is another one but has a membership fee. It depends on how much information you already have as how far you can go. Ask family members for as much info that they might have, old family Bibles, newspaper obits, pictures that might have dates and places. If you know where the family came from, you can go to findagrave and search for the surname, If you know where the cemetery is, collect the names & dates. While doing look-ups, enter the information you have and you'll be able to find census records that can give you so much info, parents names, siblings, where they lived and so on. Be careful as there are many names that will match who your looking for and thats why you need to find as much info as you can before you start your look-ups. Another place is genealogyforum.com, look for messageboard, find the first letter of the last name and click on it, the next page will show you 2 or 3 more letters of the last name, click on the one your looking for, you'll see a page of names and look for the last name your searching and if its there, click on it. This page will show you everyone that is looking for the same name as you are. You might find someone looking for the same family. You can also post a message.
