How to Install a Modem Driver..
Most new modems come with a disk that contains the drivers needed to allow the modem to work with your computer system. The Windows operating system recognizes many different brands and models of modems, and will install these drivers automatically when the system boots up and the new hardware is recognized. There are times, though, when you will have to install the modem driver yourself; here's how.
1
Insert the driver disk into the CD drive. If your modem did not come with a driver disk, download the needed drivers from either the manufacturer's website or look at driversguide.com to find the needed files (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Click on the "Start" button and then on "Control Panel."
-
Step 3
Click on the "Phone and Modem Options" icon.
-
Step 4
Click on the "Modems" tab on the new screen, then click on "Add."
-
Step 5
Click on "Next" to see if Windows will automatically find the new modem. If not, click the "Next" button to select your modem from a list.
-
Step 6
Click "Have Disk" on the next screen that opens.
-
Step 7
Browse to the location where the modem driver files are located. This can be either a CD/DVD drive or where the downloaded file is located.
-
Step 8
Click "OK" at the top of the screen to install the modem drivers.
-
Step 9
Reboot your computer if prompted in order to begin using your modem.
-
If the modem you are attempting to install is an older model, check the manufacturer's website to see if updated drivers are available for your system. Occasionally a newer modem will have conflicts with the files from an older or no longer used modem. Be sure and remove any modems that are not in use on the "Phone and Modem Options" screen. If you are installing a new modem on a laptop that has a non-working internal modem, be sure to disable or remove the internal modem before installing new modem drivers.
