I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

Prior to the French Revolution, when the National Assembly met, the revolutionaries sat on the left and the Nobles sat on the right.  Hence, the Nobles were more conservative and the Revolutionaries were more liberal.  So the left wing of the National Assembly was more liberal than the Right Wing.  And those terms have stuck and are still used today as an imprecise means of conveying ones political leanings.
