I am taking a trees and forests course, and I know the definitions of prolepsis and syllepsis.  I am having trouble being able to tell the difference when I am actually looking at an example so I am wondering if there is a general rule of thumb?  Do excurrent trees tend to have one growth while decurrent trees have another?  Is the new primary growth I am looking at when comparing lateral branch pattern the apical meristem or can it be any leading bud on a branch?  I guess I am wondering if I am looking at an entire tree, which part SPECIFICALLY do I compare the new this year's growth to the postponed lateral growth (in a proleptic tree).

Laugh more: tears cloud one's vision.

No one ever learned forest management in a classroom.  The only way to learn forest management is to live full time in a forest.  Forget the nonsense you have been fed and get in there with the subject that you have yet to study in sufficient detail.

When you see "circle scars" on trees about three feet from the ground, and can see a ceramic spike, that some witless tree hugger planted with a porta-power, in an effort to prevent its processing once cut.

Then you will see that tree die within two years and it will then become a haven for termites, that will then take out a full acre of virgin trees.  Then the whole forest will become infested, and then to get rid of the termites, we will have to clear cut six or seven acres!

Fortunately, it is never difficult to detect the ceramic spikes at the sawmill that tree huggers push into the trees, but that was the actual reason we had to clear cut as the last ditch effort to save a whole 2,000 acre forest.

Sylleptic vs proleptic branching indicates whether lateral branches will grow out the same year as the main dominating stem or the following year.  Sylleptic indicates the SAME year and proleptic indicates POSTPONED year.  If a tree exhibits sylleptic branching, at maturity it will have an excurrent branching architecture.  This means it will look like a conifer (Christmas tree - which makes sense because there are LOTS of branches at the bottom and few on the top).  Decurrent trees (all the other trees besides confers) tend to postpone their branch growth indicating it is proleptic.
