Turn off the television and teach your children how to think.

If my dog had a TEN POUND LUMP on his side, I'd take him to the vet!

Have you done that? If so, what was his or her diagnosis?

If you haven't done that, then I think perhaps you should make an appointment with your vet so your dog can get a check-up.

At the very least, give the vet a call and perhaps s/he can give you a general answer and/or suggestions over the phone.

Yes, he has been to the vet.  She thinks he can possibly benefit from surgery, but we are concerned because of his age.  The lump started small, and we hoped it wouldn't be a problem, that he would probably preceed the removal.

She cannot do a biopsy without surgery?

If she cannot do anything without surgery and it does not seem to be impacting his health and enjoyment of life over much, then I'd probably do what you're doing - just leave it alone and keep an eye on things.

At his advanced age, that's probably the best course.

Two weeks ago she tried to drain the lump, but no go.  She didn't say anything about biopsy, so I guess that could be the next step.  We don't mind spending a reasonable amount, but don't want to put him through a horrible surgery only to make things worse.

I don't blame you. I'm not a vet, so I can't offer a medically based opinion. I'd say keep doing what you're doing; but perhaps someone with more expertise will see your question and give you a better answer.
