How To Preserve Indian Pottery Shards

How do you preserve clay pottery?  I have found Indian pottery pieces and I would like to put a finish on them that would work if the pieces were to be worn.  One piece already has a hole drilled in it.  I also plan to smooth the rough edges.  I want to make sure whatever I use will not react to skin if worn or just look great if I mount some of the shards.
