Will Obama Change View On Abortion Too?

A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.

The new results, obtained from Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey, represent a significant shift from a year ago, when 50% were pro-choice and 44% pro-life. Prior to now, the highest percentage identifying as pro-life was 46%, in both August 2001 and May 2002.

The May 2009 survey documents comparable changes in public views about the legality of abortion. In answer to a question providing three options for the extent to which abortion should be legal, about as many Americans now say the procedure should be illegal in all circumstances (23%) as say it should be legal under any circumstances (22%). This contrasts with the last four years, when Gallup found a strong tilt of public attitudes in favor of unrestricted abortion.

Gallup also found public preferences for the extreme views on abortion about even -- as they are today -- in 2005 and 2002, as well as during much of the first decade of polling on this question from 1975 to 1985. Still, the dominant position on this question remains the middle option, as it has continuously since 1975: 53% currently say abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances.

When the views of this middle group are probed further -- asking these respondents whether they believe abortion should be legal in most or only a few circumstances -- Gallup finds the following breakdown in opinion.

Americans' recent shift toward the pro-life position is confirmed in two other surveys. The same three abortion questions asked on the Gallup Values and Beliefs survey were included in Gallup Poll Daily tracking from May 12-13, with nearly identical results, including a 50% to 43% pro-life versus pro-choice split on the self-identification question.

Additionally, a recent national survey by the Pew Research Center recorded an eight percentage-point decline since last August in those saying abortion should be legal in all or most cases, from 54% to 46%. The percentage saying abortion should be legal in only a few or no cases increased from 41% to 44% over the same period. As a result, support for the two broad positions is now about even, sharply different from most polling on this question since 1995, when the majority has typically favored legality.

Republicans Move to the Right

The source of the shift in abortion views is clear in the Gallup Values and Beliefs survey. The percentage of Republicans (including independents who lean Republican) calling themselves "pro-life" rose by 10 points over the past year, from 60% to 70%, while there has been essentially no change in the views of Democrats and Democratic leaners.

Similarly, by ideology, all of the increase in pro-life sentiment is seen among self-identified conservatives and moderates; the abortion views of political liberals have not changed.

"Pro-Life" Up Among Catholics and Protestants

One of the more prominent news stories touching on the abortion issue in recent months involves President Barack Obama's commencement speech and the bestowal of an honorary doctorate degree on him at the University of Notre Dame -- a Roman Catholic institution -- on Sunday. The invitation has drawn criticism from conservative Catholics and the church hierarchy because of Obama's policies in favor of legalizing and funding abortion, and the controversy might have been expected to strengthen the pro-life leanings of rank-and-file Catholics.

Nevertheless, the swelling of the pro-life position since last year is seen across Christian religious affiliations, including an eight-point gain among Protestants and a seven-point gain among Catholics.

Gender Agreement

A year ago, Gallup found more women calling themselves pro-choice than pro-life, by 50% to 43%, while men were more closely divided: 49% pro-choice, 46% pro-life. Now, because of heightened pro-life sentiment among both groups, women as well as men are more likely to be pro-life.

Men and women have been evenly divided on the issue in previous years; however, this is the first time in nine years of Gallup Values surveys that significantly more men and women are pro-life than pro-choice.

Bottom Line

With the first pro-choice president in eight years already making changes to the nation's policies on funding abortion overseas, expressing his support for the Freedom of Choice Act, and moving toward rescinding federal job protections for medical workers who refuse to participate in abortion procedures, Americans -- and, in particular, Republicans -- seem to be taking a step back from the pro-choice position. However, the retreat is evident among political moderates as well as conservatives.

It is possible that, through his abortion policies, Obama has pushed the public's understanding of what it means to be "pro-choice" slightly to the left, politically. While Democrats may support that, as they generally support everything Obama is doing as president, it may be driving others in the opposite direction.

Iam a catholic and Iam not for abortion, but the only way I would agree is thats if a women was brutally beaten, but not just get rid of the child becuaue i forgot to be causious. We have choices with all the birth control methods today a girl has choices now. Maybe they should think twice before they ingage in sexual activity. This is the 21st century kids have more knowledge today even more then the parents. Times are changing but family values play a big part on the way kids think. Instead of abortinf the child maybe giving it up for adoption would be better most girls end up killing the child and throwing it in a garbage can. SICK!!! Maybewe should be stressing a child to give it up after full term you'd be giving the child a choice and chance to become a very well developed human being.

A: How does opinion determine truth? Popular opinion has NEVER determined truth, nor can it. 95% of all scientists said Edison couldn't produce a lightbulb. The New York Times said the Wright brothers were wasting time, and later Hitler was the Man of The Year. There are thousands of examples of this throughout history. Popular opinion is wrong 95% of the time. When they are right, most of the time it is for the wrong reason. How about this one: It is against the law to fight chickens and dogs (as it should be) but it is perfectly OK to allow two people to get in a ring and beat the hell out of each other. America thinks this should be a national sport!

B: Why are 95% of all people who are against abortion, pro death penalty? They seem to be ignorant of the original purpose of our prison system, and almost always ignore the modern music and TV influence our children are subjected to. America is violently opposed to redemption, and will seek vengeance in a beastly fashion, no matter how many people it hurts.

By the way, I am a former political organizer (18 years,) and anti abortion.

Do yourself a favor.  Do some studies and compare the crime/abortion issue when this country was in a shape that one person made a living for the whole family, with todays rat race. What you are adressing are economic issues. We have crime at the level we do, and abortion, because  we no longer have families. When we had families, our tax base was based on a wage from things like the steel industry, the machine tool, farms etc. Now instead of one wage earner, families have two and three, with very poor child/parent relationships. TV, bloody video games, Ritilin, and crime takes up the slack, with parents screaming that this has nothing to do with rising crime rate and teen pregnancy.

Ask youself this: How many billboards do your children see adverising something that is sex related? TV comericials? ("This is Bob........")

Since the world is building rails, seaports, (research China's Silk Road Land Bridge) etc, which our nation used to be involved with, and which made us wealthy, Germany, and other countries are producing steel, machine tool farming etc. to satisfy this need. Are you arganizing to get back America's productive sector? Are you organizing to stop this nonsense of Free Trade, and get The American System back? This would get back our American families. Free Trade is probably as damaging as Communism, and it allows banks to run the country instead of a government. Banks would rather have gambling casinoes and 401K's instead of machine shops and farms. (Find out why we have the Federal Reserve System. Read Article 1 Section Eight of the constitution. The Fed Res is NOT Gov. owned!)

Sound complex? It wouldn't be if we didn't allow ourselves to get bogged down with symptoms, never solving the root problem. If your little girl walks into your kitchen, her head is hot, her face is flush and she has vomited. Do you give her something to sooth her little tummy? Of course! But you wouldn't be a very good parent if you didn't figure out what is wrong with her. You can't stop abortion with a bandaid. The need to treat the symptom exists, but it will NEVER solve the problem. It wont even make it better, if you do not deal with the Nations internal ills.

I will give you an example of just how time consuming, organizing a miss can be. How many peopl do you hear scream, "They are taking away our Gun Rights?" This is something that is a stupid waste of time. For example, I can run a mill and a lathe. I can make a gun. The facts of the matter, is that you can not take guns away from a country with a machine tool capability. Gun powder can be made in your kitchen. So why do people waste their time on this subject? Gotta think about it.

Don't be one of these people who say, "I'm only one person." I can point you to movements accomplishing this.

"GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS"

Hi sir., WHEN I WAS GROWING UP I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF GOD FORBID DOING ANYTHING THAT MIGHT SHAME MY FAMILY. I come from a very strict military home. It's the way the kids are brought up now, but somehow i think that you see alot more thinking twice before they take that big step to end it, and more changes have to be made. So many babies are lost out of stupidity, mothers and fathers of today have no clue, they are to busy keeping up with the "jones" and being friends with the kids, they forgot how to be the adult in the house, not that there is anything wrong with being frinds too, my son was my best friend!                                                                                           Semper fi
