New planets or DEAD planets?

Hi! I was wondering. If these stars/planets are 42 light years away, and we just recieved radiation (light/radiowaves) from them this week, isn't there the smallest teensy weensy itty bitty probability that they might already have outlived there lives(e.g. been destroyed in a supernova/turned into a blackhole) and ceased to exist the way we are seeing them in the pictures taken? And this we will only come to know in say, another 10 years, when THOSE IMAGES reache our telescopes? After all, if these planets are 42 light years away, isn't that how old these images are, since their images too will travel with the speed of light, not faster, right? I am sure I am wrong, otherwise people wouldn't be spending so much time on this research. Can anyone please tell me I'm wrong, and explain how? You can discuss with me further on email or just post here.
