Mold in ceiling or walls in historical district home

How do I remove mold in ceilings/walls of entryways of house?

I have inherited a mid-1800s home, that I was born in, from my terminately ill mother and have a multitude of restoration problems to accomplish. I am on a fixed income so am keeping the home from disintegrating, so to speek, but am having a some problems with keeping the home from being torn down because of it's age and related issues.

One big issue is that, through the decades, rain has caused mildew to form between the roof and ceilings of this historic district property. The front part of the home reeks of mildew smell as well as ceiling or walls 'falling' down due to this mold. I've repaired the outside roof and walls, but the inside is the issue.

I have used a Clorox based solution to wash the areas involved but the ceiling is twelve feet high and is impossible to reach. What can I do to remove this mold and mildew odor?

Victims of circumstance owe it to fate. Victims of choice owe it to themselves.

  1. If you are not intmidated by heights, you can rent a ladder from HD.
  2. If you are, then you will need to cover the walls and floor with painter's plastic. When you put the plastic up, start by applying 2" blue tape on the wall. Butt it up to the ceiling, but only press down the top edge. The plastic will be attached to the loose bottom edge. Now cover the floor. Get a garden prayer from you favorite store. Spray the bleach on the ceiling.
  3. You could get a 4'-8' extension for a roller. Buy a sponge or something absorbent to attach to this. Stick in bleach and swab the ceilings and walls.

If this doesn't work, repost here and I will try some other suggestions.

I would say that if you are confident that you can remove the molds yourself then you should get yourself a good and strong ladder for the job.
