Your notion of misguided has backing. Their leader, the antichrist, must be destroyed. Everyone will know it is the antichrist then he will have life breathed back into him. He will then deceive everyone into following after him except the elect.

2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness already works. Only there is one who restrains now, until he is taken out of the way.
Revelation
13:3 One of his heads looked like it had been wounded fatally. His fatal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled at the beast.
13:12 He makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed.
13:14 ..saying to those who dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast who had the sword wound and lived.
The antichrist, the one that must be taken out of the way, is jesus. His name adds up to 616 and 666 reveals the crucifix which is the image of the beast.
